Visible or invisible illnesses
Be honest. Can you tell you are ill by looking at you?
Or do people notice nothing when they first meet you ?
Is your disease or handicap visible or invisible?
People can be divided according their disease.
Or according the visibility of their disease.
The difference
To you it makes no difference. But to everybody else it does. And therefore also to you.
It doesn't really matter how sick you feel, people's responses depend highly on the visibility of your disease.
Suppose you have the same disease, but on you it is visible and on someone else it is not? The responses will be competely different. It almost seems as if this is true ...
Are you visible ill? Then you need help.
Even when you don't. If you are just using a walking cane. In everybody around you a knight awakes. People offer you help or compensation. But I'm only slightly limited!
Are you invisibly ill? Then you are exaggerating and complaining.
If you are in pain day and night, it absorbs your energy too. Do you cancel a meeting or a visit? Soon you feel the underlying message: don't be such a wuss. And: you are always complaining...
Tips visible illnesses:
your challenge is not to let people rule your life.
Do not stay at home because you fear people will stare at you. Refuse kindly but decisive any help you don't need.
Tips invisible illnesses:
your challenge is to stay true to yourself.
Even though you don't see it. I am ill. Explain your best friends how you feel. Ask for help, a seat, muscle power, a listening ear when you need it.
To the visible ill:
preserve your own space and dare to refuse help.
To the invisible ill:
force people to acknowledge your limitations,
dare to ask for help or support.
